Birth Control and STD Protection Withdrawal, Spermicide, and Syphilis. A presentation by Max Nichols and Shawn Marquez.

Withdrawal Withdrawal is a self explanatory method, in which during intercourse, the male withdrawals the penis from the vagina before ejaculating. This method has a failure rate of 18-19%, this is because some sperm is still released before ejaculation, some males may have difficulty with the timing, and the method does not prevent against any STIs.

Spermicide Spermicide is a birth control method inserted vaginally before intercourse. There are also condoms sold which are coated in a spermicide. The spermicide is used to kill or immobilize the sperm before it fertilizes an egg. This method, when “typically used”, fails 1 in 4 times. In “perfect use”, however, it only has a failure rate of 8%, but this is rare. This also does not prevent STIs.

Syphilis Syphilis is an STI that can also be transmitted during birth from mother to child. Syphilis is a bacteria, so it can be treated with penicillin and has been since the 40’s. However, once the disease is in its later stages, it can no be treated. The very end stages of syphilis are fatal, and can even cause insanity. Syphilis can be prevented via abstinence or condoms.
