Radiation Safety Regulations Part IV: Occupational Protection Requirements

Occupational Protection Requirements Contents (1/2) General responsibilities Conditions of service Classification of areas Local rules and supervision Personal protective equipment

Occupational Protection Requirements Contents (2/2) Individual monitoring and exposure assessment Monitoring of workplace Health surveillance Records Special circumstances

Occupational Exposure Protection General responsibilities (1/2) Licensees and employers are responsible for protection of workers Dose limits are not exceeded and safety is optimised protection of outside workers

Occupational Exposure Protection General responsibilities (2/2) other workers than ”radiation workers” are protected as they were members of the public workers are informed of their obligations and responsibilities for their own protection and that of others safety related reports from workers shall be recorded and appropriate remedial action be taken by the licensee or employer

Occupational Exposure Protection Conditions of service extra salary or other benefits shall not be used as substitutes for proper protection and safety female worker are advised to notify the employer of pregnancy employer shall adopt working conditions for the protection of embryo or foetus pregnancy is not a reason to exclude a female worker from work

Occupational Exposure Protection Classification of areas Controlled areas areas requiring specific measures for controlling normal exposures, preventing spread of contamination or preventing potential exposures Supervised areas areas where exposure conditions need to be kept under review

Occupational Exposure Protection Local rules and supervision written rules and procedures ensuring safety investigation levels and procedures to follow if they are exceeded supervision that rules and procedures are followed information to workers on the health risks female workers / pregnancy information, instructions and training concerning emergencies

Occupational Exposure Protection Personal protective equipment protection and safety during normal operations should not be based on personal protective equipment adequate and suitable protective equipment shall be made available, if necessary

Occupational Exposure Protection Individual monitoring and exposure assessment Licensees and employers shall arrange for the assessment of occupational exposures Individual monitoring in controlled areas Area monitoring in supervised areas Potential exposures, contamination Approved dosimetry services shall be used

Occupational Exposure Protection Area monitoring of workplace evaluation of overall radiological conditions assessment of the exposure of workers sufficient to review classification of controlled and supervised areas use of reference levels

Occupational Exposure Protection Health surveillance based on general principles of occupational health initial and continuing assessment of fitness of workers for their tasks

Occupational Exposure Protection Records of worker exposure nature of work, periods of employment doses, intakes doses, intakes in emergency intervention or accidents access by individual worker and by the Regulatory Authority retained by the licensee and employers, or the Regulatory Authority (30 years after the end of work/until the worker would be 75)

Occupational Exposure Protection Special circumstances Temporary change in some dose limit limited period of time relate to specified work areas Case by case approval of the Regulatory Authority Requirements: radiation safety is optimised workers involved have been consulted
