Spanish Colonies Location: Where did they settle? The Spanish colonies were divided into two main regions (viceroyalties) One region consisted of Mexico, Central America, and the Carribbean; it was called New Spain The other region consisted of all of South America; it was called Peru

Spanish Colonies Religion: What was the major religion? Were they tolerant of other religions? The Spanish were Catholic They were primarily intolerant of other religions; Spanish missionaries forced Native Americans to convert to Catholicism, and they disliked other European Protestants

Spanish Colonies Government: What was the Spanish colonial government like? The Spanish monarchs set up viceroyalties, and appointed viceroys to run them Viceroys shared power with a Crown- appointed council and archibishop There were no elected assemblies

French Colonies Location: Where did they settle? Primarily along the St. Lawrence river in present-day Canada

French Colonies Religion: What was the major religion? Were they tolerant of other religions? The French were Catholic Their missionaries were Jesuits, a society of Catholics that focused on education They attempted to convert the Native Americans, but were only truly successful among the Hurons

French Colonies Government: What was the French colonial government like? The French monarch controlled most of what happened in the colonies There was a military governor, a civil administrator, and a Catholic Bishop There was no elected assembly

English Colonies Location: Where did they settle? English colonies were in Virginia, at Jamestown, New England (present day Massachusetts), and New York These colonies were all along the East coast of North America

English Colonies Religion: What was the major religion? Were they tolerant of other religions? English religion varied by region, but all were Protestant The New England colonies were Puritan The New York colonies were a mix of different Protestant beliefs Mostly intolerant, except for New York, were religious communities learned to live with each other

English Colonies Government: What was the English colonial government like? In both Virginia and New England there were representative governments, where the colonists elected their own leaders In Virginia, this was called the House of Burgesses In New England, colonists got to elect their own governor
