Describe the role you play in your family. How have family roles changed over time?

Types of Family Roles Family roles are the recurrent patterns of behavior by which individuals fulfill family functions and needs.

Types of Family Roles Individual members of families occupy certain roles such as child, sibling, grandchild. Along with roles come certain social and family expectations for how those roles should be fulfilled.

Types of Family Roles Parents are expected to teach, discipline, and provide for their children. Children are expected to cooperate and respect their parents. As family members age, they take on additional roles, such as becoming a spouse, parent, or grandparent.

Traditional Roles Dad is usually the provider Breadwinner Often handles discipline

Traditional Roles Mother serves as caretaker Homemaker Teacher

Non Traditional Roles In families where both parents work, roles are shared. Fathers may be the caregivers and mother the wage earners.

Your Responsibility All members have some responsibility. Adults provide food, clothing and shelter. You may have to care for younger siblings or a pet. Other tasks may include washing dishes or cleaning your room.
