There are 5 types of problems… 1) Fraction x Fraction 2) Whole number x Fraction 3) Mixed number x Mixed number 4) Mixed number x Fraction 5) Whole number x Mixed number

Fraction x Fraction What do you do to solve these types of problems? 1 x 3 = ? 2 4 Multiply numerator x numerator = product Multiply denominator x denominator = product Simplify your answer using ANY method that you know, the BIRTHDAY CAKE METHOD WORKS!!!

Whole number x Fraction What do you do to solve these types of problems? 5 x 5 = ? 6 Imagine that your whole number has a 1 as its denominator. 5 x 5 =

Whole number x Fraction Now your answer is an improper fraction. Can you leave it like this? NO, of course not! You must convert it back to a mixed number! Then, simplify your answer if you need to ÷ 6 = 4 ⅙ 6

Mixed number x Mixed number What do you do to solve these types of problems? 2 ⅓ x 1 ⅖ = ? Steps: 1)Convert into an improper fraction 2 ⅓ 7 1 ⅖ 7 3 5

Mixed number x Mixed number Steps continued: 2) Multiply numerator x numerator 7 X 7 = 49 3) Multiply denominator x denominator 3 X 5 = 15

Mixed number x Mixed number Steps continued: 4) Now you have an improper fraction. Can you leave it like this? NO, of course not! ÷ 15 = 3 4/ ) Simplify your answer if you need to.

Mixed number x Fraction How do we solve these types of problems? 4 ⅕ x ⅛ = ? Steps: 1)Convert the mixed number into an improper fraction. 4 ⅕ 21/5 Remember to use the pattern- denominator x whole number + numerator/ original denominator

Mixed number x Fraction Steps continued: 21/ 5 x 1/8 2) Now you can multiply… Numerator x Numerator 21 X 1 = 21 Denominator x Denominator 5X 8 = 40 3) 21/40 is your answer, it cannot be simplified.

Whole number x Mixed number How do we solve these types of problems? 9X 1⅓ = ? Steps: 1)Imagine that there is a 1 under the whole number 9 9/1 2) Convert the mixed number into an improper fraction 1⅓ 4/3

Whole number x Mixed number Steps continued: 9/1 x 4/3 3) Multiply Numerator x Numerator 9X 4 = 36 Denominator x Denominator 1X 3 = 3 4) Simplify 36/3 36 ÷ 3 = 12
