The Equality Act 2010 This act replaces all existing legislation such as Race Relations Act, Disability Discrimination Act and Sex Discrimination Act Protection is now extended to (learners) who are pregnant or undergoing gender reassignment. See ACAS handout ‘ Equality Act 2010’

There are eight protected characteristics Age Disability Faith and Belief Gender reassignment (new) Pregnancy and maternity (new) Race Sex Sexual Orientation See Handout Annex A : Protected characteristics

Negative experiences include: Inability to access services – ‘planning courses’ Prejudiced attitudes and behaviour – ‘ground rules’ Harassment – ‘ complaints procedure’ ‘tutorials’ Bullying – ‘classroom management’ Exclusion - ‘resources’ Negative media portrayal ‘ wider experience’

More subtle experiences include: Difficulties finding employment Others’ perceptions of your abilities Lack of adaptation of the workplace Ignorance and prejudice Stereotypical assumptions Patronising attitudes Cultural misunderstandings Faith awareness raising exercise
