Operating Vehicle Control Devices

 Controls in cars may look different, but perform the same function in each vehicle.  It is important to remember that when operating any vehicle, comfort, or control device the driver’s attention must not be diverted from the path of travel for more than an instant.

Accelerator & Brake Pedal Brake Pedal Used to decrease speed. Heel Remains on floor

Accelerator & Brake Pedal Extensions Pedal extensions are available to meet special needs of the driver in reaching the pedal with the foot in proper position.

Gear Selector Lever  Gear Selector Lever –  Automatic Transmission-  Located on the right side of the steering wheel column or on a console located between the two front seats  P- Parking, engine starting, and key removal  R-Reverse  N-Neutral  D-Normal Driving (O/D overdrive on/off switch)  2-Stronger engine braking/ power  L(1)-Maximum engine braking/ power  Manual Transmission -  Located on the right side of the steering wheel column or on a console located between the two front seats

Parking Brake Sometimes mistakenly referred to as an emergency brake A hand operated parking brake is located to right side of the driver on the floor or center console

Parking Brake The purpose is to hold the vehicle in place when it is in park to protect the transmission. It is important to set the parking brake before putting the gear shifter in (P)ark

Parking Brake A foot operated parking brake is located to the far left side of the driver’s position.

Ignition Switch Locks the steering wheel and shifter lever

Ignition Switch Enables the driver to start and turn off the engine or use the accessories. The ignition is located to the right side of the steering wheel column near or in the dashboard.

Cruise Control This devise allows a driver to select and travel at a set speed without having to keep a foot on the accelerator pedal.

Cruise Control Cruise control allows you to cruise at speeds over 25mph. Should not be used on slippery surfaces!!

Class Work In your driver’s education book, read pages Then, in your notebook, do Lesson #1 review questions 1+2 on page 137. Write the questions!! Save these in your notebook to be turned in with the test.
