In your Reader’s/Writer’s Journal write the definition. There will be a quiz on Tuesday.

 holds a piece of writing together. Purpose: to set forth the writer’s perspective (point of view) on a subject.  good thesis is strong and assertive, and states clearly the writer’s position and lets readers know where the passage is going.  establishes consistent tone (writer’s attitude towards the subject).

 to form into a coherent (logical) unity or functioning whole.  to form, coordinate, or blend into a functioning whole Following are several organizational patterns.

 show how things are alike and different useful when you want to show the differences and similarities between ideas, people, places, etc

 shows reasons and results useful when you want to show the reasons for and results of scientific experiments, historical events, etc

 shows the sequence in which events happen useful when you want to describe the steps in a procedure, tell the story of someone or something’s life, etc

 presents ideas and information starting with the most important to the least important point; order can be reversed useful when you want to present evidence, give reasons for an argument, etc

 Write responses in your Reader’s/ Writer’s Journal (pg 171). Turn the questions into your answer: Example: The organizational pattern I think the writer will use for the anecdote is _____________ (pick one from page 170). You did the “THINK” and the “INK.” Now we will “PAIR” and “SHARE!”

 Turn to a new page in your Reader’s/ Writer’s Journal.  Label the page: “Elephant Line-up” Venn Diagram (Don’t forget the Table of Contents) Venn Diagrams are used to compare and contrast things. You are going to compare and contrast African elephants and Indian elephants based on information from the article on page 171.
