Web Browsers The purpose is to display info on Web pages The most common is internet explorer  To check what browser is being used, go to HELP>About Browser. Do not change at school!  To update a browser, go to TOOLS>Web Updates

Types of Browsers Internet Explorer – owned by Microsoft Netscape – owned by AOL corporation  Netscape spinoff – Mozilla Firefox Opera – free with ads included  For opera browser free of ads will cost a fee Browsers may have Java, Flash, or multimedia file add-ons  Java – computer operating language

Webpages URL – Uniform Resource Locator HTTP – Hypertext Transfer Protocol

Websites.com – commercial site, may be trying to sell something.edu – higher education site. May be library or student page.gov – U.S. government affiliated site.org – non-profit organizations. May be biased

Bias Pushing of information to gain favoritism towards a certain idea or group Website may be biased based on the purpose of the website. May only give positive or negative facts regarding the topic of interest on the website

Credibility How reliable is the webpage? Examine the URL, if there is a tilde present, this applies it is a personal page. TILDE (~) Look for “About the Site” to learn about the organization or agency working the site Look for “About the Author” to learn about the person working the site  Then check the library database to see if the author has wrote any books/papers on the topics discussed

Audience All websites have an audience in mind

Accuracy Refers to whether the information contained is factual or opinion Compare the info to other resources to determine if there is doubt. Look for documentation information provided  This could be in-text citations or a bibliography Look for explanation of research methods.

Relevance Too much information vs. Not enough
