2 World Wide Web  System of internet servers that support specially formatted documents  Written in html  Not all internet servers are part of the world wide web  Web browsers like Firefox and Internet Explorer make it easy to access the World Wide Web

3 HTTP  Short for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol  Defines how messages are formatted and transmitted

4 Web Page  Document in the World Wide Web  Identified with a unique URL

5 URL  Stands for Uniform Resource Labor  Global address of documents and other resources on the world wide web  Protocol identifier indicates what protocol to use  Resource name specifies the IP address or domain name

6 IP Address  Identifier for a computer or device on TCP/ IP network  Format of an IP address is a 32-bit numeric address

7 HyperText Markup Language  Main markup language for web pages  Basic building blocks of webpages

8 What is a Browser?  Computer applications which are used to view data in html, xml, or java based format  Used to view pages on the internet

9 Planning a Website  Audience-consider who will visit your site and what they will want  Purpose- Why are you creating a web site?  Content Organization-create a list of all the information sources, services, processes, and other content you offer  Maintainability- how are you going to manage and update the content on a regular basis?

10 How to Plan Web Navigation Links  Use same navigation schemes on all the pages  Text-based navigation is easier to maintain, decreases download time, and works better with text only browsers  Use clear and descriptive titles for navigation elements

11 How to Design Great Web Pages  Keep your focus on fast pages  Keep your pages short, but not too short  Good navigation  Keep images small  Use appropriate colors  Write as globally as you can  Check your spelling and grammar  Keep links current  Put contact information on your pages
