CLI Compass Bringing the Classroom Experience Online for K-3 Teachers

Think about the following… What percentage of low-income children in our country are able to read at grade level by the end of 4 th grade? What percentage of middle-income children in our country are able to read at grade level by the end of 4 th grade?

In the United States… 17% of low-income fourth graders are reading at grade level according to the 2011 NAEP. 46% of middle-income fourth graders are reading at grade level according to the 2011 NAEP.

In Philadelphia… 11% of low income fourth graders are reading at grade level according to the 2011 NAEP. 39% of students drop out before graduating high school. 23% of adults living in the city have college degrees.

Our mission guides us. Teachers are the single most important in-school factor for student achievement. For that reason, quality professional development is critical for their success.

Children’s Literacy Initiative (CLI) Building on the strengths of teachers to create sustainable change CLI is a national non profit that provides professional development services on effective literacy practices to pre-k through 3rd grade teachers. CLI builds on the strengths of teachers by providing them with training, coaching, and the classroom and online resources needed to deliver expert literacy instruction to children.

Investing in Innovation (i3) Grant As the recipient of a $21.7 million Investing in Innovation (i3) grant from the U.S. Department of Education, CLI is working to leverage its proven model to change the culture of entire schools. Through the i3 Grant, CLI : has established CLI Model Classrooms TM in nearly 150 schools nationwide. 35 of those classrooms are in Chicago. provided literacy training not only to teachers but also the principals, coaches and other staff that support them. CLI will help ensure that schools will be able to sustain the practices that ensure every student can read by third grade. will invest $6.6 million in CPS schools over the course of 5 years.
