Unit 4 Lesson 1: adjectives Page 180

Modifiers: any word that is used to describe another word Adjective: a word that modifies a noun or a pronoun. 1. Adjectives tell which, what kind, or how many 2. Words like many, this, and her can be either pronouns OR adjectives. Words which are ordinarily other parts of speech may also be adjectives. It varies per sentence. The cave walls were decorated with animal pictures. Cave dwellers had painted mostly hunting scenes. The painted animals are shown in action.

To decide if a word is an adjective, ask yourself: Does it answer which, what kind, or how many? If it does, it’s probably an adjective.

More about adjectives: 3. More than one adjective can modify the same noun. Explorers found several decorated caves. 4. You can form some adjectives from proper nouns. These are called proper adjectives and are capitalized. Paintings in French and Spanish caves are beautiful. (both modify caves)

More! On adjectives The words a, an, and the are articles. Because articles tell which, they are adjectives! The is a definite article, because it refers to one or more particular things. A and an are indefinite articles because they refer to one of a group.

Adjectives! 6. Sometimes an adjective follows a linking verb and refers to the subject of the sentence. This is called a predicate adjective. The drawings looked natural. Their colors were vivid. 7. An adjective may be more than one word. When such an adjective comes before a noun, it is usually hyphenated. Up-to-date tests indicate the age of the painting.
