My Health Record Northern Queensland Stakeholder Consultations January 2016

Overview of Today’s Presentation 1.What is My Health Record? 2.What’s in it for me?– Individuals – Healthcare Providers 3.Current Participation and Use 4.My Health Record Programme 5.Automatic Creation of Records 6.Role of NQ PHN 7.Questions

A secure, online summary of an individual’s health information It is part of a national system – it traverses state/ territory boundaries, as well as healthcare sectors and services It is personally controlled – the individual controls who can see their record It can be viewed and added to anytime, anywhere by any registered healthcare provider involved in the patient’s care. What is My Health Record?

4

What’s in it for Individuals? Improved coordination of care as they navigate the health system No need for them to repeat their story every time they see someone new Reduced duplication of medical tests Puts them at the centre of their healthcare -mobile enablement coming -link to wearable technologies too

What’s in it for Healthcare Providers? Access to information about their patients that they may not otherwise have had leading to: -Improved clinical decision making -Fewer adverse drug events for their patients -Less avoidable hospital admissions -Better health outcomes But My Health Record does not replace existing medical records or the way healthcare providers take and review clinical notes 6

Current Participation and Use million individuals registered, increasing by 2,000 per day Over 8,000 healthcare provider organisations registered, increasing at a rate of per month including: – 5,278 General Practices uploading on average 500 Shared Health Summaries per week – 451 Public Hospitals and community clinics and 22 Private Hospitals between them uploading discharge summaries per week – 155 Aged Care Residential Services – 1,161 Retail Pharmacies – 1,291 registrations from other provider types including Dental Services, Optometry, Allied Health and Chiropractic Services. Around 350,000 clinical documents and 2.8 million prescription and dispense records uploaded 7 51 Software Products are My Health Record compatible enabling them to support healthcare providers connect their Clinical Information Systems to the My Health Record system.

My Health Record Programme Announced in the 2015 Budget Responds to the Royle Review of the PCEHR and includes: 1.Improved and continued operation of the My Health Record system and digital health foundations -Rename to My Health Record -Improvements to usability -Increased clinical content in records -Education and training for healthcare providers -Revised GP incentives 2.New governance arrangements 3.Trials of participation arrangements, including the automatic creation of records 8

Automatic Creation of Records To be pioneered in Northern Queensland and Nepean Blue Mountains, NSW Will be supported by: -national activities to encourage adoption -localised information campaigns -opportunity for face-to-face training for healthcare providers Outcomes will inform decisions (expected 2017) about future strategies for bringing forward the benefits of the My Health Record system nationally Independent evaluator – Siggins Miller

Role of NQ PHN NQ PHN is a strong supporter of the use of digital health records Will help meet health priorities in the region and deliver a better functioning health system Role includes increasing awareness of the My Health Record amongst healthcare providers and in communities; education, training and assistance with connecting to the system; and practice support. NQ PHN should be your first port of call about the My Health Record.

Wrap Up So in summary: My Health Record has a role in improving clinical decision making and health outcomes The system is in place Usability has improved Soon nearly all Northern Queenslanders will have a My Health Record Time to engage, learn more about the system and how it can benefit you and your patients, and work with your PHN to connect to and use the system. 12
