Laura Bridgman By Celeste Dart 3/21/11 1 st Period

Date born and Died She was born in Hanover, New Hampshire, on December 21, She was 59 years old when she died on May 24, 1889 at the Perkins School for the Blind.

How did Laura Bridgman become Deaf and Blind? She became deaf and blind at the age of 24 months when she became ill with Scarlet Fever. This same fever caused her two older sisters and a brother to die.

Family Life Laura Bridgman’s fathers name was Daniel Bridgman. He was a farmer and her mother’s name was Harmony Bridgman. She had two older sisters and a brother, but Scarlet fever killed them.

Where did Laura Bridgman grow up and live after school? Laura Bridgman lived in Hanover, New Hampshire until she went to the Perkins School for the Blind in October, 1837 and she grew up there. After school she stayed and taught until her death. How was Laura Bridgman treated being deaf and blind at the time she lived? She was thought as being genetically defective and inferior. She was treated like she was a freak and most of the disabled people in the 1800’s were hidden away or became beggars.

Did Laura Bridgman make an impact on how the deaf and blind are treated today? She showed that she could learn. People thought that the deaf and blind could not be taught. She proved them wrong by showing that all the disabled can be taught. What Laura Bridgman did as a job? After she finished school she stayed and taught the other blind students as her job.
