Also called the circulatory system, it consists of the heart, blood vessels, and blood. It carries needed substances to cells and carries waste products.
The Circulatory System. Function  Consists of the heart and blood vessels  Carries oxygen and nutrients to the body’s cells and remove carbon dioxide.

 The Circulatory system  Blood vessels  Arteries  Veins

Arteries are the blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood AWAY from the heart The veins bring the blood without oxygen BACK to the heart

 Four chambers  Upper chambers= atria  Lower chambers= ventricles  One way valves control the flow of blood through the heart

 This will show the flow of blood through the heart  circulatorysystem.cfm circulatorysystem.cfm

 Components:  Blood cells  red  white  Blood plasma  Platelets

Blood comes in four main types : O, A, B and AB.Type O blood is a UNIVERSAL DONOR. Type AB blood is a UNIVERSAL RECEIVER.

Percentage distribution of blood types in the general population ABABO 37%12%3%47%

 Used to categorize blood  Rhesus positive (+)  Rhesus negative (-)  If the Rh antigen is present the blood is positive

Blood TransfusionsDonating blood to the Red CrossSAFETY, SAFETY, SAFETY!!!

 Donors must provide a thorough history  Recent travel  Infections  Medicines  Health problems  Blood donations are tested for:  HIV  Hepatitis B and C  Syphilis  West Nile virus  If any of these are found, the blood is destroyed.

 What is a pulse?  Throbbing of the arteries caused by contractions of the heart  Let’s check your pulse!

 When a doctor takes your pulse he/she is mainly checking for two things:  How fast your pulse is  If your pulse is regular(same time between beats)

 What is blood pressure?  Pressure of the blood against the walls of the arteries  Results from two forces:  Heart pumping blood into the arteries  Arteries resisting blood flow

 The systolic number represents the pressure while the heart contracts.  The diastolic number represents the pressure when the heart relaxes.  Systolic/Diastolic  118/70

 Hypertension (140/90)  High blood pressure can cause:  Heart attack  Stroke  Risk factors:  Diet  High stress levels  Exercise  Tobacco use
