1 Circulatory System

2 Transport Moves materials (water, nutrients, hormones and wastes) through the body to the cells that need them

3 Made up of…. Cardiovascular System Heart, arteries, veins, capillaries
Blood Red Blood Cells (RBC), White Blood Cells (WBC), plasma and platelets Lymphatic System Lymph

4 Heart Muscular organ - acts as a pump that drives the circulatory system Has four chambers Upper chambers called atria Lower chambers called ventricles Arteries and Veins branch out from the heart

5 Our circulatory system is a double circulatory system.
This means it has two parts. Lungs The right side of the system deals with deoxygenated (oxygen poor) blood. The left side of the system deals with oxygenated blood. Body cells

6 Vessels Arteries Thick muscular walls Carry blood away from the heart
Main Artery is called the AORTA Veins Carry blood back to the heart Have valves to prevent backflow Capillaries Very thin walls Gases and nutrients pass from the blood into the cells Connects the arteries and veins

7 Blood Consists of: RBC – carries O2 WBC – fight disease
Plasma – fluid of the blood, carries everything EXCEPT O2 Platelets – clot the blood *Distributes body heat, helps maintain a steady temperature

8 Lymph Fluid in spaces between the body’s cells
Contained in the lymph nodes which filter bacteria and viruses from the lymph Helps to protect the body against infection
