Why do people live near volcanoes? In this lesson we will find out: Why do people live near volcanoes? How do they prepare for eruptions?

The volcano we are going to look at is in an LEDC - Indonesia

Climate: tropical; hot, humid; more moderate in highlands Terrain: mostly coastal lowlands; larger islands have interior mountains Natural resources: petroleum, tin, natural gas, nickel, timber, bauxite, copper, fertile soils, coal, gold, silver Land use:arable land: 11.03% permanent crops: 7.04% other: 81.93% (2005) Population:245,452,739 (July 2006 est.) Labor force - by occupation:agriculture: 46.5% industry: 11.8% services: 41.7% (1999 est.) Fact File

Most villagers still go about their daily business, intent on staying at their homes with their personal belongings

Farmers who work near the base of the mountain, are faced with the problem that their fields are buried under ash.

Indonesian rescuers wait as a digging machine tries to save residents trapped in the bunker after Mount Merapi erupted. People fled to the steel shelter when evacuated from the village during a burst of volcanic activity on Mount Merapi. The bunker was later covered with up to 2m of debris as hot as 300 ºC.

Living with a volcano – Merapi, Indonesia. 1.How did the eruption of 1994 affect the people living nearby? 2.What sort of plate boundary is Merapi on? 3.How does the volcano help farmers? 4.Why do people continue to live near the volcano? 5.How is the volcano monitored? 6.What happens in an eruption? 7.What other problems occur in areas of heavy rainfall? 8.How are people trying to solve those problems? 9.How does the Civil Defence prepare for eruptions? 10.What problems do people have after the eruption?
