An Introduction to Media Literacy The Five Core Concepts

What articles of your clothing would qualify as media? How do you feel about wearing clothes that help others communicate a message? In what ways might your clothing be both media and an expression of your personal identity?

What is media literacy? Media literacy is the ability to understand how the media work, how they convey meaning. Characteristics of mass media: 1.Media convey messages through visuals, language, and/or sound. 2.Media messages are mass-produced for a mass audience and are mediated by some form of technology. 3.Producers of media messages are not in the same physical space as the receiver(s) of those messages.

Examples of mass media: radio television newspapers magazines the internet movies cell phones iPods or mp3 players video and computer games, recorded music billboards and other kinds of advertising (including words or images on clothing, signs in stores or sports stadiums, food packaging) posters and flyers political communications likes buttons, bumper stickers, and robocalls books school newsletters, maps money
