DAILY SPARK WARM-UP ACTIVITIES SHAKESPEARE

AT THE THEATER In Shakespeare’s day, going to see a play was not a sober cultural event. Calling out to the actors onstage was common, as was talking to your friends during the performance and buying beer and nuts from vendors. Describe your last experience at the movies. What did you wear and do? What was the mood of the audience? What are your impressions of moviegoing?

ACT I: SCENE ONE In the first scene of Romeo and Juliet, we learn of the hatred between the Capulets and the Montagues when Sampson and Gregory, servants of the Capulets, start a fight with servants of the Montagues. To provoke the Montague men, Sampson bites his thumb at them in a gesture of disrespect: Abram: Do you bit your thumb at us, sir? Sampson: I do bite my thumb, sir. A: Do you bite your thumb at us, sir? … S: No sir, I do not bite my thumb at you, sir, but I bite my thumb, sir. Gregory: Do you quarrel, sir? A: Quarrel, sir? No, sir. The way in which people starting fights in Shakespeare’s time sounds strikingly similar to how people start fights in our time. Write a modern dialogue between two people about to brawl. Use lots of repetition and provoking qusetions, as Shakespeare did.

ROMEO’S SADNESS We learn that Romeo, a Montague, is depressed. He takes walks late at night and comes home just before sunrise. He goes to his room, “shuts up his windows, locks fair daylight out” (I.i.132), and won’t tell anyone what’s wrong. How do you behave when you’re depressed? Do you keep to yourself, as Romeo does? Do you prefer company? Do you try to distract yourself or take your mind off the problem? Explain.

At the beginning of the play, Romeo is in love with Rosaline, a beautiful girl who has sworn to remain a virgin forever. Benvolio: Then she hath sworn that she will still live chaste? Romeo: She hath, and in that sparing makes huge waste, For beauty, starved with her severity, Cuts beauty off from all posterity. (I.i ) What objection against virginity is Romeo voicing? Explain.

MARRIED YOUNG Juliet’s mother, Lady Capulet, announces that a man named Paris wants to marry Juliet, who is thirteen years old. Paris will attend a party that Juliet’s father is throwing that night. Lady Capulet says that when she was thirteen, she was already mother to Juliet. Imagine that you’d gotten married at age thirteen. Write a paragraph of 4-6 sentences about how your life might be different. Think about…Would you be in school? Would you have kids? Would you be working? What would your social life be like? How would your parents react? Would they help, or send you out on your own?

Romeo and his friends Benvolio and Mercutio plan to crash Lord Capulet’s party. Before they go in, Romeo speaks: Romeo: …My mind misgives Some consequence yet hanging in the stars Shall bitterly begin his fearful date With this night’s revels, and expire the term Of a despised life closed in my breast By some vile forfeit of untimely death. (I.iv ) What do you think Romeo fears? Name the literary device Shakespeare used to describe this fear.

BALCONY SCENE Act II, scene ii of Romeo and Juliet contains a line that is often misinterpreted. The line is bolded below: Juliet: O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name. Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, And I’ll no longer be a Capulet. Can you figure out the common misinterpretation of the line and the actual meaning of the line? Cite specific words and phrases and evidence.

FLIRTING METHODS Romeo calls up to Juliet, who is on her balcony. They talk, and Juliet begs Romeo to profess his love for her: Juliet: O gentle Romeo, If thou dost love, pronounce if faithfully. Or if thou think’st I am too quickly won, I’ll from and be perverse and say thee nay, So thou wilt woo. (II.ii.94-98) Juliet says that if Romeo thinks she’s too quick to profess her love for him, she’ll play hard to get. She’ll “from and be perverse” and put him off in order to make him “woo” her. How do you act when you like someone? Do you play games or play hard to get in order to capture the interest of the person you like, or do you try to be honest? Write about your romance tactics.

RUSHING TO THE ALTAR After a brief meeting at the Capulet’s party and a conversation later that night, Romeo and Juliet marry. Can you imagine any situation in which you’d marry someone after such a brief period? Explain.

CASTING CALL Shakespeare’s Juliet is thirteen years old, and Romeo probably isn’t much older. Some directors have ignored this fact completely, casting middle- aged actors in the title roles. If you were casting a movie version of the play, which actors would you pick to play Romeo and Juliet? Why?

CHARACTER Mercutio tells Benvolio that he, Benvolio, is a certain type of person: Mercutio: Thou art like one of those fellows that, when he enters the confines of a tavern, claps me his sword upon the table and says, “God send me no need of thee!” and, by the operation of the second cup, draws it on the drawer when indeed there is no need. What kind of guy is Benvolio, according to Mercutio?

ROMEO’S DESPAIR Romeo gets drawn into a fight and kills Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin. The prince decrees that Romeo must be banished from Verona as punishment for the murder. Romeo hides at the house of his friend, Friar Laurence, who tries to reason with Romeo. 1. Put Romeo’s response in your own words, using modern English: Romeo: Thou canst not speak of that thou dost not feel. Wert thou as young as I, Juliet thy love, An hour but married, Tybalt murdered, Doting like me, and liked me banished, Then mighst thou speak, then mightst thou tear thy hair And fall upon the ground, as I do now… (III.iii.64-69) 2. Do you think teenagers overreact? Why do they feel so misunderstood?

BETRAYAL After Romeo is banished, Juliet’s father, who knows nothing of his daughter’s marriage, tells Juliet she must marry Paris right away. When she protests, he says he’ll throw her out of the house to starve if she disobeys him. Lady Capulet refuses to take Juliet’s side. After her parents leave, Juliet asks for her nurse’s opinion. The nurse, who facilitated Juliet’s marriage to Romeo, suggests that Juliet should marry Paris. After all, she says, Romeo isn’t around, so Juliet can’t enjoy him, and Paris is a handsome man. Juliet, horrified by this advice, decides she can never confide in her Nurse again. Have you ever abruptly lost faith in an adult as Juliet loses faith in her nurse? Write about the experience.

Juliet takes a potion that makes her appear to be dead, and her family, falling for the ruse, buries her in a tomb. Romeo hears of her supposed death, breaks into her tomb, and kills himself by drinking poison. Juliet awakes, finds Romeo dead, and kills herself with a knife. The prince blames the tragedy on the feud between the Capulets and the Montagues. Put his accusation in your own words, using modern English. Prince: Capulet! Montague! See what a scourge is laid upon your hate That heaven finds means to kill your joys with love! (V.iii )
