State Events 2015 State Championships Sites

 State events are a significant point of emphasis for staff during the school year.  It is important to understand there are many considerations when selecting sites State Events

 State event selection is based on:  The type of experience desired as reflected in the most recent Strategic Plan (“Big Time” atmosphere)  Willingness of sites to host  Availability of host sites  Site’s ability to meet state event facilities requirements  Willingness and experience of event directors  Cost State Events

 Beginning with the school year, staff recommends pursuing the following options regarding state events. State Events

Baseball/Softball/Soccer/Lacrosse  Staff recommends – Keep current Jubilee set-up  Rationale – The Jubilee format creates an exciting atmosphere for all participants, while minimizing costs (personnel, security, rental fees) associated with a state event. The League benefits from better media coverage by having multiple sports in the same area. State Events

Team Golf / Girls Open Golf  Staff recommends – Explore multi-year relationships with golf courses that have demonstrated a desire to host VHSL tournaments. Provide a process for rotation based on classification’s geography. State Events

Swim and Dive  Staff recommends – Two event sites with a rotation among three facilities to geographically balance travel State Events

Indoor Track  Staff recommends – 2 sites – 1A-4A and 5A-6A State Events

Outdoor Track  Staff recommends – 3 sites, two classifications per site  1A-2A at Radford  3A-4A at Harrisonburg  5A-6A at Todd Stadium  Among alternate sites that will be considered – Hampton University, James Madison University, SportsBackers Stadium (Richmond) State Events

Wrestling  Staff recommends – 2 sites, 3 classifications per site  1A-3A at Salem Civic Center  4A-6A at The Scope or Robinson?  Alternate sites will be considered that can match the VHSL state event timeline State Events

Football  Staff recommends – 3 sites, 2 games per site (Saturday Doubleheader)  1A-2A sites include Salem, William & Mary, JMU, Liberty, Richmond  3A-4A sites include Liberty, Salem, William and Mary, JMU, Richmond, UVA, Va. Tech  5A-6A sites include UVA, Richmond, William and Mary, ODU, Todd Stadium  Other sites will be considered as appropriate State Events

Cheerleading  Staff recommends – Single site – like Siegel Center State Events

Volleyball  Staff recommends – Semifinals at school sites and Finals at a single site – like Siegel Center  Alternatives  Other equivalent facility State Events

Cross Country  Staff recommends – Single site – like Great Meadow  Alternatives  Other equivalent facility State Events

Field Hockey  Staff recommends – Single site – Like Regional Training Center in Virginia Beach  Requirements – 2 fields; lights; turf State Events

Basketball  Staff recommends – Quarterfinals at Supersites; semis and finals at one site.  Alternatives – Facilities that can host on dates consistent with the VHSL calendar and of similar nature to current championships held at the Siegel Center. State Events

Gymnastics  Staff recommends – High school rotation  Rationale – University/Civic facility would be cost prohibitive Tennis  Staff recommends – Keep some connection w/Jubilee  Alternatives – Identify facilities that can host (6 courts per gender per class needed); secure best facility at lowest cost. State Events

Forensics  Staff recommends – Clover Hill High School  Rationale – Free except for custodial costs Media  Staff recommends – Fredericksburg, Richmond, Roanoke  Alternatives – Pending partnership site in Richmond State Events

Theatre  Staff recommends –  1A-4A – Monticello High School – free except for custodial costs; central location  5A-6A – Dickinson Center – reasonable rental; central location Debate  Staff recommends – Liberty University or like facility State Events

Film  Staff recommends – VCU or like facility that has some connection to film Scholastic Bowl  Staff recommends – William & Mary or like facility State Events

Next Steps  VHSL staff plans to meet with potential Virginia host localities and their interested community participants. This meeting will serve to:  Better market our championships  Secure great sites that are economically beneficial to the League and those communities.  Build deeper community relationships within the VHSL footprint State Events
