The Fermentation of Fruit By Emily & Tess

Fermentation can be found in nature (fruits) and is used to make alcohol. Starches and sugars are converted to alcohol and carbon dioxide from the enzymes in yeast. This process is called alcoholic fermentation. Fruits will start with sugar (glucose) and when given energy (sun) will ripen and convert to ethyl alcohol and carbon dioxide. Reactants and Products Glucose C6H12O6 Covalent + Energy (sun) = 2 ethyl alcohols 2(CH3CH2OH) Covalent 2 carbon dioxides 2(CO2) Covalent Decomposition

Rearrangment Glucose= 6 carbons 12 hydrogen and 6 oxygen Glucose breaks down into 4 atoms, 2 ethyl alcohols and 2 carbon dioxides 2 carbon dioxides= 2 carbons and 4 oxygen 2 ethyl alcohols= 4 carbons, 12 hydrogen and 2 oxygen All together all 4 molecules contain the same amount of atoms as one glucose molecule

Scientists and History The actual formula has 12 reactions but for this presentation we have used the simplified version The actual formula has 12 reactions but for this presentation we have used the simplified version In the 1930’s 2 German biochemists, G.Embdem & O.Meyerhof worked out the sequence of reactions of how glucose ferments.
