CM220 College Composition II Sunday, January 31, Unit 8: Reflection & Revision Welcome to College Composition II! Unit 8 Seminar Robin Parent

CM220 College Composition II Sunday, January 31, Unit 8: Reflection & Revision seminar agenda Our seminar will focus on:  Practicing the Paramedic Method of Revision which will make your writing clearer and more effective.  A brief introduction to revision versus editing. In this unit, we will discuss how to:  Interpret the feedback you receive during peer reviews  Utilize that feedback to generate ideas for revision  Use the post-draft outline to reveal problems in your own draft  Apply the Paramedic Method of Revision to your writing

CM220 College Composition II Sunday, January 31, Unit 8: Reflection & Revision For those who participated in peer reviews, thank you for providing an open, honest critique for your partner(s)! What techniques and exercises (including collaborative peer reviews) have been the most useful for you so far? What surprised you most about the comments you received on your draft? post peer review

CM220 College Composition II Sunday, January 31, Unit 8: Reflection & Revision post peer review Now that you have completed the peer review process and have received feedback on your own papers, it is time to analyze and incorporate those ideas into your writing.  Remember that your peer partner approached your paper as an outsider: if he or she stumbled or was confused by certain passages (even if it makes sense to you) chances are strong that your ideas or sentence structure needs clarification and/or modification.  The feedback you received is meant to help you improve your writing so use it to your advantage!

CM220 College Composition II Sunday, January 31, Unit 8: Reflection & Revision post peer review Please read your peer reviews carefully. Your peers and instructor spent a considerable amount of time reviewing your work for your benefit. Note comments that reveal:  Confusing sentences or paragraphs  Spelling or mechanical errors  Formatting issues  Citation issues  Comments that reflect praise for areas that work well in the paper Use the feedback you receive to strengthen your argument as well as the structure of your paper!

CM220 College Composition II Sunday, January 31, Unit 8: Reflection & Revision revision versus editing There is a big difference between revision and editing!

CM220 College Composition II Sunday, January 31, Unit 8: Reflection & Revision revision versus editing  the paper's general organization  the writer's analysis of sources  the effectiveness of the thesis statement, introduction and conclusion. Revision focuses on the “big picture” and helps us analyze: Using revision techniques like the post draft outline and peer reviews can be very beneficial. Furthermore, during revision, be prepared to make significant changes to your work by adding or subtracting passages of your text.

CM220 College Composition II Sunday, January 31, Unit 8: Reflection & Revision revision versus editing  spelling  sentence structure  punctuation issues  grammar  formatting issues and APA details Editing focuses on the details: Using the Paramedic Method of Revision can help you eliminate wordiness and make your writing clear and concise. Editing is often referred to as proofreading.

CM220 College Composition II Sunday, January 31, Unit 8: Reflection & Revision revision versus editing Don’t make the mistake of editing before you revise! Editing is very time consuming and, after you make a great number of small changes to grammar, punctuation, sentence structure and spelling, it would be a shame to delete all that work after realizing that particular paragraph no longer works in your paper. Revision deals with addition (expanding ideas to clarify meaning) and subtraction (cutting out wordiness and text that does not relate to the thesis statement). It focuses on the big picture and the way in which you present your argument to the reader. Work smarter not harder! Revise before editing!

CM220 College Composition II Sunday, January 31, Unit 8: Reflection & Revision the paramedic method of revision The Paramedic Method of Revision is a technique that targets wordiness and helps streamline your writing so it is clear and concise. This technique will help you revise your first (rough) draft and turn it into a polished formal persuasive research paper: the final project due at the end of Unit 9.

CM220 College Composition II Sunday, January 31, Unit 8: Reflection & Revision the paramedic method of revision Streamlining your writing will have a very positive effect on your reader. Your message will be easier to understand and more effective. Please be sure to read the Writing Center document on the Writing Process (Editing and Revising). The Paramedic Method of Revision will show you how to identify and remove unnecessary prepositions as well as identify and modify forms of the verbs “to be” and “to have.”

CM220 College Composition II Sunday, January 31, Unit 8: Reflection & Revision putting the post-draft outline to use You will create a post-draft outline of the first draft of your paper and post it to the Unit 8 Discussion Board in order to receive feedback from your peers and your instructor. After completing the outline, you might discover that rearranging some of your paragraphs will make the paper flow more smoothly. You might also see areas or repetition, or see where you forgot to include crucial information. The post-draft outline should reveal important clues about the organization of your paper and the effectiveness of your argument.

CM220 College Composition II Sunday, January 31, Unit 8: Reflection & Revision a look ahead - unit 9 The Unit 9 seminar will focus on:  Polishing your final formal persuasive research paper.  Understanding the different stages of rewriting a draft  Apply proofreading strategies to detect punctuation, spelling, and sentence-structure errors

CM220 College Composition II Sunday, January 31, Unit 8: Reflection & Revision Thank you for being with us today!
