Egyptian Technology Written Language: Hieroglyphics Images stand for ideas as well as sounds. Knowledge of reading hieroglyphs was lost for many years. It was not until the discovery of the Rosetta Stone in 1799 that modern people could understand the writing above! Very few people in Ancient Egypt could read or write. Wrote on tomb walls and on papyrus scrolls. Wrote prayers, as well as adventure stories, fairy tales, and love stories.
