2 Art and Writing Art Art Colorful and detailed They painted stories of gods in everyday life. Statues were large and showed gods and pharaohs. The great sphinx is the most famous statue/the body of a lion and the head of a person Writing Main system of writing was hieroglyphics which used picture symbols Used papyrus to make paper sheets The Rosetta Stone helped translate Egyptian-it took Ancient Egyptian to Ancient Greek- Discovered in 1799

3 Mummification and Burial  Mummification- the making of mummies to prevent the breakdown of the dead body.  Mummification started to protect the ka (the personality being separated from the body) so the soul wouldn’t vanish.  The Egyptian religion included many rituals after their death to honor their ka.  After mummification, Egyptians were buried with possessions people thought they would need in the after life. 4 Egyptian Religion  Egyptians worshiped many gods although few central to their religion. Their central gods change over the kingdoms history. They also believed that the gods were controlling all natural events.  Many temples featured obelisks: tall, thin pillars with pyramid shaped tops. Made from a single piece of stone with intricate designs. Temples were built to honor the gods.  Egyptians religious beliefs were constantly evolving.  A few major gods were –Osiris, king and judge of the dead –Isis, goddess of nature, –Horus, god of the sky, –Anubis, judge of the dead and protector of cemeteries. –Re- god of the sun  The god of the sun was a key figure in Egyptian religion. 5 Life in Ancient Egypt  Pharaoh controlled everything and married their sisters to keep it in the family.  Wealthier families lived in house made of bricks. Poor families lived in huts, and the father was the head of the family.  Top: Bureaucrats, Priests, Military Officials  2 nd : Artisans, Crafts, Merchants  3 rd : Peasant Farmers (90%)  Slaves: POW’s and Criminals
