Section 1 Key Terms 1.Abu Bakr: Abu Bakr was one of Muhammad’s first converts. He was the leader of Islam, also known as a Caliph, after Muhammad died. Abu Bakr was not a religious leader, but rather a political and military leader. He led the Muslims in wars in which they conquered many lands outside of Arabia. 2.Caliph: A caliph is a title that Muslims use for the highest leader of Islam. In Arabic it means “successor.” 3.Tolerance: Tolerance means acceptance.

Section 1 Questions 1.How did the Muslims conquer other lands? P.80 A: The Muslims were able to conquer other lands because they had strong armies, and the other empires’ armies were weak after years of fighting. 2.How did Arab merchants spread Islam? P. 82 A: Arab merchants spread Islam by sharing Islamic customs and beliefs while traveling to trade goods with other countries.

Section 1 Questions 3.What is religious tolerance and how did the Muslims practice it? P.83 A: Religious tolerance is the acceptance of other religions. The Muslims practiced it by letting some of the people they conquered continue to practice their own religions. 4.What language was important to the spread of Islam? Why? P. 83 A: Arabic was important to the spread of Islam. It was important because it enabled (allowed) many different cultures to read the sacred texts of Islam and to communicate better with other Muslims.
