3 The Spread of Islam Arab merchants travelling shared their faith.
Arab armies conquering neighboring lands. In 717, The Arab Army attacked Constantinople but was defeated. Still, there were many converts in the area.

4 The Spread of Islam In 732, the Arabs were defeated by European soldiers at the Battle of Tours. This halted the advancement of Islam in Europe. Previous attempts to conquer regions were successful because: Neighboring regions were weaker Arabs were united under the new religion.

5 The Spread of Islam Under Muslim rule, other religions were allowed to practice their own religion. Non-Muslims had fewer rights than Muslims. Were not able to carry weapons or serve in military. Had to pay a special tax to support the government.

Great advances in math and science. Lasting works of literature and architecture.

7 The Golden Age The Muslims had created great wealth.
Muslim rulers called caliphs. The caliph was considered Muhammad’s successor. Bagdad was the capital of the Muslim Empire.

8 The Golden Age Harun ar-Rashid was caliph starting in 786 and ruled for 23 years. He created a very glamorous court. He was also a great supporter of the arts. Greatly rewarded those who pleased him.

9 The Golden Age Arab scholars created new works and studied those of the past. They made significant contributions to Algebra. Ibn Sina organized medical knowledge into the Canon of Medicine.

10 The Golden Age Poetry was important to Muslim writers.
One group used poetry to teach their ideas and beliefs. Sufis were mystics that believed they could draw closer to God through prayer and fasting.
