Presentation transcript:

Wednesday, Sept. 9th Today: Topic: Time Management Activity: Notes & discussion.

Notes on Time Management Add a date to your note paper – Sept. 9, 2015 Time mgmt. – everyone has 24 hrs per day, 168 hrs per week Activities – might include eat, sleep, work, relax, exercise, attend class & study

Balance Sense of balance – achieved with good TM “Perfect” TM skills do not make you a better student or employee “Excessive” TM can be a problem if you obsess over all the details “Poor” TM does not mean you will be a total failure So we strive for “balance”

Main reason for TM… Provide organization Provide structure Peace of mind A form of self-management

Questions: 1. Why should TM be viewed as not only a college success strategy, but as a life success skill? 2. Why do you think high and college students have difficulties with TM?

How can a Planner help with TM? TM is an important life skill. It takes some time and effort to develop…just like sports, music, or art. Earlier you learn and practice, you have time to develop it. For most students, high school is a time of managing multiple homework assignments, class projects, team sports, band, theater, clubs & organizations; plus social life! In a world filled with activities obligations & distractions… a Planner can help (if you use it.)

Disorganization can inhibit performance. Examples:  Frequently lost papers  Assignments turned in late  Backpack full of crumpled, disorganized papers, books, & random stuff  Trouble breaking down long term projects  Procrastination  Problems at home due to grades

So what can I do?  Evaluate the problem  Use Planner and personal filing system  Lighten load of backpack  Create a study space (school & home)  Use anti-procrastination strategies  Summary: An organized life = less stress, better grades, & free time.

Unlike high school, college requires… Much more time studying outside of class. Generally, in college, you spend two hours each week studying for every one hour in class. Example: College Biology class = three credit hours Class meets for one hour Monday, Wednesday, & Friday In addition to a lab, you are likely to need to study six hours for the class. Now multiply that by how many other 3 credit hour classes you are taking.

Purpose of TM… 1. Plan activities and schedule time to complete them. 2. Help you to be more punctual (on time).

Advantages of TM Doesn’t take too much time to implement (start it) May only take you about 10 minutes to set up your Planner. Strategies are easy to use. As TM improves, you have less stress resulting from procrastination. Memory aid – you don’t have to remember as much. Sense of control over your life.

Prioritize Activity: 1. Dad is out of town so you have to watch your little brother from 3:30 to 5:30 when Mom gets home. 2. Test in Biology tomorrow. 3. FCCLA meeting is from 7-8:30 tonight. 4. CSI is on from 8 – 9:00 and you really want to see this episode. 5. Your room has to be clean before you can go out this weekend (said Mom) 6. You have a group project due in 2 days, and you are the one who is supposed to purchase the supplies for class the next day.

What would you do to “prioritize”? Can you arrange the items? Can you change them? Can you multi-task? Can you delegate?
