To know six strategies for dealing with stress To develop techniques for managing stress

12 What is stress? Stress is one of the body’s natural responses to something that is threatening or frightening. It is something that we all experience from time to time. Stress is not necessarily harmful: mild forms can motivate and energise you. However, if your stress level is too high then it can cause difficulties, including hindering your ability to prepare for and perform during your exams.

13 How do people deal with stress?
For many of us with hectic, stressful lives, relaxation means zoning out in front of the TV at the end of the day or snatching some extra sleep at the weekend. Unfortunately, this does little to help reduce the damaging effects of stress on the mind and body.

14 Six strategies for dealing with stress
Unfortunately there is no magic wand that will remove the impact of stress on your life. Controlling stress is an active process which means that you will have to take steps to limit its impact.

15 Step One: Be careful about what you eat and drink
Try to eat a well balanced diet, eating at least three regular meals a day. Eat foods which will release energy slowly and are likely to have a calming effect. Food or drink high in sugar may give you instant energy,  but in the long term may wind you up leaving you feeling more nervy and edgy than you did before. Limit your consumption of caffeine particularly found in tea, coffee, fizzy soft drinks. Excess caffeine tends to heighten arousal and increases "jittery" feelings; it can also impair your concentration and may keep you awake at night.

16 Step Two: Get enough sleep
Make sure that you get plenty of rest; six to eight hours a night are recommended. If getting to sleep is a problem, ensure that you have at least a half an hour break from your revision before going to bed. Use this break to do anything relaxing which will take your mind off your work such as: having a soak in the bath; chatting to your friends; writing a letter; listening to some  music.

17 Step Three: Take regular exercise
Exercising regularly will not only help to keep you physically healthy, but also uses up the hormones and nervous energy produced when you are stressed. Exercise will also help to relax the muscles which become tense when you are stressed, and, as exercise increases the blood flow around the body, it can help you to think more clearly. You do not have to take up a strenuous sport: try swimming, walking, cycling or dancing. Anything that gets you moving around and is enjoyable is beneficial, especially if it involves spending at least half an hour in the fresh air every day.

18 Step Four: Control your breathing
If you notice that you are starting to feel very stressed, for example as you wait for the examination to start, try to regulate your breathing by concentrating on breathing out to a slow count of four; the breathing in will take care of itself. It will be helpful if you practise this exercise when you are not stressed so that you are very familiar with the technique when you need actually need it.

19 Step Five: Make time for fun
Build leisure time into your revision days and the days that you sit your exams. Get involved in a non-academic activity, such as sports, crafts, hobbies or music. Anything that you find relaxing or enjoyable which will give you a break from thinking or worrying about your exams will be beneficial.

20 Step Six: Improve your study skills
Get organised for learning! Read through your notes; use a mind map to write out what you have remembered; return to your notes and highlight all the forgotten facts! You could then add these facts to the mind map. Try this before your next test. Effective study skills can reduce stress by making you feel more in control of your work and more confident that you will succeed. Remember that most of your fellow students will be feeling the same way as you do. Tell your friends and family how you feel and find ways of relaxing with them which will help to support you. Clear your desk so that you have a good work space Ensure that your desk is well lit Make sure you have a comfortable seat that gives you good support Buy a desk tidy Stock up with pens, pencils and coloured pencils Buy a pack of highlighter pens Buy a long ruler, protractor, compass, eraser, pencil sharpener Buy some post it notes Buy some white cards for summarising Buy some A3 paper for mind maps Stock up with A4 graph, plain and lined paper Buy some coloured stickers: it can be useful to colour code books by subject (timetables can also be colour coded by subject)

Where does your time go? - 168 hours in the week – use them wisely Allocate time for essential tasks Schedule in time for studying – including breaks Schedule time for YOU e.g. relaxation, social, exercise Be aware of procrastination...

23 How To Revise Effectively!

24 Step 1: Understand Study the topic to be learnt slowly
Make sure you understand the key points and concepts Mark up the text if necessary – underline, highlight etc Re-read each paragraph slowly

25 Step 2: Summarise Now make your revision note summary
What is the main idea, theme, concept? What are the main points? How does the logic develop? Use bullet points, minds maps, patterned notes Link ideas using mnemonics, mind maps, crazy stories Note the title and date of the revision notes (E.g. Mathematics, Trigonometry, 3rd March) Organise the notes carefully and keep them in a file This is now in your short term memory. You will forget 80% of it, if you don’t go to step 3. GO TO STEP 3, but first take a break.

26 Step 3: Memorise Take 25 minutes learning ‘bites’ with 5 min breaks
After each 5 min break test your self Cover the original notes summary Write down the main points Speak it loud Tell someone else Repeat many times The material is now in your long term memory. You will forget 40% of it, if you don’t go to step 4. GO TO STEP 4.

27 Step 4: Track/Review Create a revision diary (one A4 page per day)
Make a revision plan for each topic E.g. 1 day later, I week later, 1 month later. Record this in your revision diary

28 Where should I revise Find somewhere quiet and comfy with a good light. It is important that it is quiet as it is the best way to concentrate (so turn pause on that Michael Bublé song!) after all you sit exams in silence. A library would be ideal, otherwise ask your friends and family to have some consideration

29 Make a revision timetable ...
.... yes and try to stick to it .… and this requires will power and I always feel guilty when I have to add x to tomorrow’s to-do-list. Make sure the timetable has all the subjects ... quite obvious so no excuses! Mix your strong and weak subjects so you don’t do all of your difficult subjects on the same day

30 Practise Past Papers and past Questions
Practise makes perfect and it’s true - this is essential. Do as many as possible and use the mark scheme to make comparisons to understand what examiners are looking for. If you start your revision early, plan your revision carefully and follow your plan with those past papers, your chances of success are greatly enhanced.
