Animal Nutrition and Feeds

What is Nutrition! Nutrition is the science of dealing with the utilization of food by the body processes which transforms food into body tissues and energy.

To obtain and utilize surplus or unusable feed stuffs And convert them to desirable products such as meat, milk, eggs, fibre and body’s activity and heat

What is a Nutrient? A single class of food or group of like foods that aids in the support of life and makes it possible for animals to grow or provide energy for physiological processes.

Digestible Nutrient Digestibility – percentage of food which is used by the animal for energy, growth, and repair. The portion of the nutrient which may be broken down (digested) and absorbed and used by the body.

The Six Nutrients Needed Protein Carbohydrates Fats Minerals Vitamins Water

Proteins  Needed for growth and repair  Helps form muscles, internal organs, skin, hair, wool, milk, feathers, hoofs and horns  The farmer is paid for producing proteins in the form of meat, wool, eggs and milk  Contain carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen

Examples of Proteins 1.White Clover 27% 2.Chickory19% 3.Lucerne30% 4.Ryegrass15% 5.Grass Silage16% 6.Hay12% 7.Barley straw5% 8.Swedes11% 9.Turnips20% 10. maize silage8%

Carbohydrates Furnish energy for body functions, growth and reproduction The largest part of the animals food supply and usually the fibrous part of the diet Include sugars, starch and cellulose Are made of carbon, oxygen and hydrogen

Fats Furnish a concentrated source of energy, up to 2.25 times as much energy as carbohydrates do Form cholesterol, steroids and other body compounds Found in every cell in the body Feeds high in fats and oils are found in seeds Are made of carbon, oxygen and hydrogen, but contain much larger proportions of carbon and hydrogen than carbohydrates do They also provide energy reserves, protection for vital organs, and they insulate the body

Minerals  Primarily found in bones and teeth - eg. Calcium and phoshorous  Important in blood for the carrying of oxygen - iron  Regulates heartbeat with potassium, sodium and calcium

Are only needed in small amounts Are essential for life and health Provide a defense against disease, promote growth and reproduction Contribute to the general health of the animal

Is vital to life. An animal will die more quickly without water that food. Important functions include: Transport nutrients around body (in blood) Regulates body temperature. Moves food through the gut WATER

Nutritional Requirements of Animals 1.Muscular work – walking, breathing, heart beat etc. 2.Keeping warm 3.Storing energy in the body during growth 4.Producing milk, eggs, wool, meat.

Where does the energy go? Gross energy lost as dung Digestible energy lost as methane and urine Metabolisable Energy (MJ) MaintenanceProduction Reproduction

Daily requirements Animal and its production state Daily energy requirement (MJ) Feed Intake (kg DM/day) Sheep (40 kg) maintenance Pregnant ewe (40 kg) Lactating ewe (40 kg) with 2 lambs Beef steer (450 kg) maintenance Dairy cow

Supplements Supplements are extra feeds that supply the body with additional nutrients. Some of the supplements are minerals salt, copper, iodine and iron Vitamin A and D are also very important to ruminant animals SaltCopperIron
