Fairview School Traditional Learning Centre

We have 8 distinct Alternative Programs in multiple sites:  Aboriginal Focus  All Boys  All Girls  Arts-Centred  Canadian Studies  Montessori  Science  Traditional Learning Centre (TLC)

Why Alternative Programs?  Providing families with choices to meet the unique learning needs of their child  Programs focus on a particular language, culture, subject (Arts, Science), or teaching philosophy  Informed choice is essential – what is THIS particular program about and how does it meet MY child’s needs?

Key Messages  Each program has unique features  Integrity of the program remains the same across sites  All follow Alberta Programs of Study with Alberta Teachers’ Association Certified Teachers  Where there is a lottery process, all families are eligible to apply  Aligned with system timeframe for registration

Lottery Process  Where a program is oversubscribed the lottery process will be employed  Registrations are categorized using 3 criteria:  Category 1 - walk zone with siblings  Category 2 - walk zone no siblings OR bus zone with siblings  Category 3 - bus zone no siblings

Timeline for Registration  Open 2 nd Monday in January  Closed noon on Tuesday before Teachers Convention  Lottery drawn on Wednesday before Teachers Convention  Lottery outcome sent by the last school day in February  Parents must accept/decline by 2 nd Friday in March

Elements of the TLC Program:  academic enrichment  character education  mandatory Music/Band until end of grade 9  French as a Second Language from grade 1

Differences and similarities with community school programs: Differences:  character education program  French from grade 1  Music/Band until end of grade 9 Similarities:  Alberta Programs of Study  second language opportunities  daily PE  Character  Citizenship  Personal Development

The TLC classroom:  utilizes the gradual release of responsibility model  provides whole group instruction as primary teaching approach  has elementary classes organized in straight grades  sings O Canada daily

A TLC student demonstrates…  a willingness to participate in positive social interactions and take a leadership role when engaging in problem solving, acts of citizenship and service  respect for self, others, and the environment  a willingness to work independently within a structured setting  self-management and organizational skills  a commitment to daily homework

Other considerations:  transportation provided by yellow school bus carrier or Calgary Transit through congregated stops for those families that are within the school’s officially designated area  register so your address can be considered when routes/stops are planned  school uniform

Fairview Cohort groupings  Grade 5 and 6 are heterogeneous  Grade 7 some re-grouping on success in mathematics  Grade 8 and 9 streamed classes base on student success and willingness to complete grade 10 mathematics by end of grade 9.

Fairview Music is an integral part of the TLC program. This includes outside of class time practices and performances. Band is required & begins at grade 5. Band or Choral required for grade 7 & 8 and at least one Fine Arts option in Grade 9

Fairview First  Two alternative programs  Integration of students in all clubs and student activities  PE & Complementary (7-9) classes are mixed  Communication is a shared responsibility  Agenda  D2L  Website  /Phone messaging  (Twitter)
