Activating Prior Knowledge Have you heard the word television? The root tele means “far away.” Can you see the root astr in astronomer? The root terr means “star” or “outer space.” Can you see the root tele in the Spanish word “telefono” or in the English word telephone?

Concept Development Root : The fundamental element of a word or form, exclusive of all affixes and inflectional phonetic changes. Root: The root is the part of the word that contains the basic meaning.
