1 Vocabulary and Concept Development EDI
Standard: 1.4 Use knowledge of antonyms, synonyms, homophones, and homographs to determine the meanings of words. Teacher reads the standard as students repeat.

3 Activating Prior Knowledge
Have you ever wondered how the words “up” and “down” are related? “Up” is the opposite of “down.” “Up” and “down” are antonyms because they are words with opposite meanings. Can you think of two other words that are antonyms? A and B share their thoughts. Teacher calls on 2-3 non-volunteers to share their thoughts.

Homographs are words that have the same spelling but different meanings and sometimes different pronunciations. Call on 3 or 4 students strategically or call on 3 or 4 non-volunteers to tell what an affix and a root is.
