What is crude oil? Crude oil is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons with small amounts of other chemicals such as sculpture. The crude oil is useless as a mixture and must be sent to an oil refinery to be separated. Crude oil is from different parts of the world, or even from different lowest point in the same oilfield, contain different mixtures of hydrocarbons and other compounds.

How Oil Refining Works? The crude oil contains hundreds of different types of hydrocarbons mixed together. You have to separate the different types of hydrocarbons to have something useful. Different hydrocarbon have higher boiling points, so they can all be separated by separating mixtures.
