-Choose a type of accessory that would be marketable -You will conduct research to find information about it -You will design a new and innovative version of it -You will create the packaging for this item -You will market your product through some kind of media (magazine ad, website, commercial) -You will present your design and marketing materials to the class. Project Runway Tasks:

As we begin, identify the roles of each group member and record. Unit 8 Project: Fashion Design and Marketing Fashion House Title:_____________________ Lead Designer:_____________________ Assistant Designer:_____________________ Marketing Specialist: _____________________ Layout Editor: _____________________

The Project 1. Choose an accessory 2. Research the accessory. How and why was it used originally? How about now? 3. Design your accessory in some new way. Choose colors, line, shape, materials. Be able to defend your choices! Either draw out by hand or use technology to generate a color sketch of your item. 4. Decide for whom you will market your accessory. 5. Create an ad for your item. You could create a magazine ad layout, a website, or a commercial. 6. Create a presentation in which you will discuss your accessory, its history, your design and innovations and defend your marketing strategy.

Pick your accessory!

So, what is a FASHION ACCESSORY, anyway? A fashion accessory is a decorative item that adds to an outfit. Often, these things have a functional purpose. Watches help tell the time, purses allow people to carry items around with them, glasses help people see. Other examples include jewelry, ties, shoes, gloves, etc. What will you choose?

Discover your history!

So, what’s your story? Every accessory has its own special story….What’s yours? Here are some questions to get you stared! Who wore it, invented it and/or made it popular? What is it made of? When did people start wearing them? Where was it worn once and where is it worn now? How were they made? How are they made now? Why did they become popular and why are they important today? Click on the picture to find a short video about neck ties… bet you didn’t know there was such a history behind this simple item!

Be the designer!

Design: how-to, step by step STEP 1: Create a CONCEPT BOARD The concept board is a collage or an idea board. You should collect different pictures you like. These will be your inspiration. They don’t have to just be pictures of ties. Maybe you find a picture of a piano keyboard or a sunset. Find pictures of nature, color, patterns and texture: Anything could become the inspiration for your design! Examples are found on the next slides

Concept Boards What inspires you?

Sketch out your product Create a simple sketch for your product, making sure to add notes to explain your choices for color, line, texture, pattern, etc.

More examples of sketches:

Sell your product!

Advertising: Brainstorm What is your design company/fashion house name? Who will want to buy your product? Why will they want it? How and when will they use it? What kind of packaging/advertising will attract these people to your product? What is your logo and color scheme What words, colors, logos and designs will appear on the page?

Create an ad or website layout to advertise your product Use the information you discovered to design an ad that will appeal to your market. Choose a template for your ad/website layout. There are many free ones online: Templates/Free-Sample-Ad-Template.aspx Templates/Free-Sample-Ad-Template.aspx Wix.com Create a statement about why your product is the best and why everyone should want it.

Finespun shirts are a reason to come to work each day: Our pure linen materials and selection of calming colors will allow you to work in quality and comfort. This is a sample of a Wix.com website layout.

Finally: The presentation Create a presentation that incorporates all the elements you created and discovered. Don’t forget to include: – An introductory slide with your group name and company logo – History/background information on your accessory – Your concept board – Sketches, including final product sketch – Ad layout copy (make sure to explain your choices!) – A concluding statement reflecting on what you learned through this project

Checklist You chose an accessory You research the accessory, discovering how and why was it used originally and how it is used now.
