Religion and Death (12) Grief Care and Death Aj. Masayo Urasaki Feb

Main purpose of this topic Death is the important topic about Religious Studies. But it is not enough to study only each religious traditions about death for understanding throught our daily life. Today's Theme "Grief Care" is focus on human feelings when we face with death, based on Psyachological views.

What is Grief ? 1) It is caused by a major life change 2) It is a normal reaction to a death or loss in a person's life 3) It can be hard, stressful and tiring, but it is not an illness 4) It helps us to let go of the past and adjust to a new life without the person who died

How does grief affect people? All people grieve differently. Some people will feel shocked and numb in the beginning. Strange and painful thoughts and feelings may follow: 1) thoughts of confusion 2) disbelief 3) wondering if this is just a dream 4) feelings of sadness, anger, guilt, loneliness, bitterness, fear, edginess, nervousness, short tempered, and lack of confidence All of these feelings are natural.

People who are grieving may... cry a lot blame others have upset stomachs and headaches have problems sleeping, resting, eating or doing small tasks have no energy feel they have the same problems as the person who has died

People who are grieving may find that Grief goes on much longer than they imagined There are no quick fixes or ways to grieve Each person has to work through his or her grief and in his or her own way. It is not always easy for others to help. Grief helps the person to deal with the death. If it is not dealt with it may get deeper and show up later as a mental or physical illness.

7 Hospice Care Movement in modern Society Hospice → Hospitium (Latin word) both Host and Guest Beginning at Primary Christian Era for Pilgrims as residence. → The essence is not depend on facilities, but principles of Care and how to communicate the people.

8 Contemporary Hospice Movement Dr. Cicely Saunders ( ) Built “St.Christofer’s Hospice in 1967 at England Palliative Care / Holistic Care Team Approach After reduce the physical pain, sometimes patients have face to spiritual pain including meaning of life, suffering of existence, guilty consciousness.

9 Elizabeth Kubler-Ross ( 1928 ~ 2004 ) American Psychatrist "On death and dying" Interview with serious illness patients at her hospital. At first, many doctors refused her offers to interview patitents.(Their main thoughts... Death is defeat) Be shaking emotions not only patients but also Cure and Care-givers

Five stages of patients Emotional Process (By Dr. Ross) 1) Denial and Shock 2) Anger 3) Bargaining 4) Depression 5) Acceptance

The Role of Funeral 1) Grief Care A funeral can help you to feel a sense of closure to your loved one’s well lived life. People can provide a shoulder to cry on, a hug, or just be there for you as you go through this difficult time in your life, and that is a great benefit in dealing with grief. Around this time, many people will also find themselves reminiscing about the good times with their loved ones. This is good and very healthy, and it is one more way of how a funeral helps grief.

Role of Funeral 2) what you believe after death If people believe that he/she will be reunited with their loved one in the hereafter, a funeral that emphasizes this idea can be a way of how a funeral helps grief. If however, people do not believe in an afterlife, many funerals will offer a host of ways in which people can remind themselves what their loved one has done here on earth, and how his legacy will live on far after he/she has passed.

Thanatology ==> The scientific study of Death Thanatos means "Death" in Greek language Interdisciplinary Study about Death Medical, Biological, Social sciences, Psychological, Cultural studies, Religious Studies, and so on.
