ERA Commons

Complete Your Profile NIH progress reports will not be accepted if profiles for personnel on the project are not complete: Individuals with Undergraduate, Graduate Student, and Postdoctoral roles on a project are required to complete the following fields in the Commons Personal Profile: Birthdate, Gender, Race/Ethnicity, U.S. Citizenship Status, and Country of Citizenship, or indicate that they do not wish to respond. Individuals with a Graduate Student role must enter at least one degree and those with a Postdoctoral role must enter a doctoral degree. The profile must also include the name of institution issuing the degree.

Acknowledgement Requirement from Award Notice* Each publication, press release, or other document about research supported by an NIH award must include an acknowledgment of NIH award support and a disclaimer such as “Research reported in this publication was supported by the National Institute Of General Medical Sciences of the National Institutes of Health under Award Number T32GM The content is solely the responsibility of the authors and does not necessarily represent the official views of the National Institutes of Health.” *From the award notice.

Requirement to Make Research Freely Available* The NIH Public Access Policy implements Division F Section 217 of PL (Omnibus Appropriations Act, 2009). The law states: The Director of the National Institutes of Health ("NIH") shall require in the current fiscal year and thereafter that all investigators funded by the NIH submit or have submitted for them to the National Library of Medicine's PubMed Central an electronic version of their final, peer-reviewed manuscripts upon acceptance for publication, to be made publicly available no later than 12 months after the official date of publication: Provided, that the NIH shall implement the public access policy in a manner consistent with copyright law. *

Clarification on Trainee Research* Trainee, scholar, and participant publications must be reported … if: the publication was accepted for publication or published during the reporting period; and the publication resulted from work conducted while the individual was supported by the award (i.e., receiving a stipend or salary from the award). Awardees are responsible for ensuring publications are deposited into the NIHMS upon acceptance for publication. *

How Do I Comply? The mechanism varies depending on the journal. Read the journal’s policy!!! Journals with full participation are shown here:

ACS Example* The “free method”: Self deposit of the manuscript… *

Self Deposit in PubMed Central Log in using your Commons ID. Right side of the page outlines the submission process.
