2 NIH U PDATED P UBLIC A CCESS P OLICY The Director of the National Institutes of Health shall require that all investigators funded by the NIH submit or have submitted for them to the National Library of Medicine’s PubMed Central an electronic version of their final, peer-reviewed manuscripts upon acceptance for publication, to be made publicly available no later than 12 months after the official date of publication

3 NIH U PDATED P UBLIC A CCESS P OLICY Went into effect on April 7, 2008 Previous policy - voluntary to submit to PubMed Central Applies to any peer-reviewed journal article where research was funded by NIH Even if the PI isn’t an author Three steps to compliance

4 S TEP 1 – A DDRESS C OPYRIGHT Author is responsible for addressing copyright. Address at time of submission of article Make sure that author has permission to deposit in PubMed Central Some journals will submit to PubMed Central for you - easiest Some journals will submit to PubMed Central for you, but you must pay a fee Some journals won’t submit to PubMed Central and you will have to submit on your own

5 S TEP 2 – S UBMIT A RTICLE Submit final peer-reviewed article, with graphics and supplemental material Submit your word doc and images, not the proof from the publisher If journal will submit for you, nothing for you to do (easy!) If you need to do submission, use the NIH Manuscript Submission System (also easy!)NIH Manuscript Submission System

6 S TEP 3 – C ITE A RTICLE Every article in PubMed Central has a unique PubMed Central ID (PMCID) Starting May 25, 2008: When submitting NIH applications, proposals, or progress reports, you must include the PMCID for each of your NIH-funded articles
