Physical Properties of Two Sands Lab Read and follow all the directions that are lettered in black. Write down all the information or answers that are in green.

1.  The chemical name of sand is silica.

2.  Silica is made up of silicon and oxygen.

3.  Magic sand is regular sand that has been coated with an oil-like substance.

4. Lab Questions  Can playground sand be described based on physical properties?  Can Magic Sand be described based on physical properties?

5. Data Table PropertyPlayground SandMagic Sand Size of grains Shape of grains Color Texture Odor Magnetism Mass Volume Solubility Other Observations

A. Materials- check to see you have all the items, if you are missing anything raise your hand.  baggy of Magic Sand (this will red, blue, orange orgreen) and a scoop  baggy of playground sand and a scoop  2 small beakers  1 large beaker with water  paper towels  2 sticks  2 small cups  1 baggy with a magnet inside DO NOT REMOVE THE MAGNET FROM THE BAGGY.

B.  Using the scoop place 2 scoops of Magic Sand into one of the small cups. Place the scoop back into the baggy and close the baggy up.

C.  Using the scoop place 2 scoops of playground sand into the other small cup. Put the scoop back into the baggy and close the baggy.

D.  Observe the two sands in the cups. You may touch the sands, they are not harmful.  Fill in your chart: size of grains (don’t just write small), shape of grains, color, texture and odor.

E.  LEAVE THE MAGNET IN THE BAGGY.  Place the magnet next to the playground sand.  Write “yes” if grains are attracted. “No” if they aren’t.

F.F.  LEAVE THE MAGNET IN THE BAGGY.  Place the magnet next to the magic sand.  Write “yes” if grains are attracted. “No” if they aren’t.

G.  Send one person in the group to the back counter.  Place the small cup of playground sand on the balance. The cup doesn’t need to be subtracted.  Mass it.  Write the amount in grams in the chart.

H.  Send one person in the group to the back counter.  Place the small cup of Magic Sand on the balance. The cup doesn’t need to be subtracted.  Mass it.  Write the amount in grams in the chart.

I.  The water displacement method was used for the volume of the playground sand Starting volume was 50 mL, ending volume is 75 mL.  Write the volume in the chart.

J.  The water displacement method was used for the volume of the Magic sand. Starting volume was 35 mL, ending volume is 55 mL.  Write the volume in the chart.

K.  Put in 50 mL of water into each beaker. Pour the playground sand from the cup into the beaker. Stir with the stick to check for solubility.  Record “yes” if any dissolves.  Record “no” if it doesn’t.

L.  Pour the Magic sand from the cup into the other beaker. Stir with the stick to check for solubility.  Record “yes” if any dissolves.  Record “no” if it doesn’t.

M.  As carefully as possible, pour the water out of the beaker with the Magic sand into the other small beaker beaker. Try to keep as much Magic Sand in it’s beaker as possible and get as much water into the other beaker. It is ok if some of the Magic Sand gets poured out.

N.  Observe what happens.  Fill in chart with anything you observe about the Magic Sand after the water is poured out.

Lab Clean up Person A  Use a paper towel to completely wipe the small cups clean.  Put both small cups back into your lab tray.

Lab Clean up Person B  Take the beaker with the Magic sand the cart in the back of the room. Pour off any water into the bucket and pour the sand onto the towel.  Return to your group, wipe out the beaker, put it back in the tray.

Lab Clean up Person C  Take the beaker with the water and playground sand to the back counter. Pour the water and sand into the bucket. Rinse out the beaker, pour this rinse into the bucket. Return to your seat and wipe out the beaker. Put it back in the tray.

Lab Clean up Person D  Put everything back into the tray. Get two clean sticks from Mrs. Perez.  Put some paper towels in the tray.  Return the tray to the counter.  Throw the used sticks and paper towels into the trash can.

Everyone  Make two claims one about the playground sand and one about Magic Sand.
