Presentation on theme: "Atoms All matter is made of atoms."— Presentation transcript:

1 Atoms All matter is made of atoms.
Molecules and compounds are made by atoms bonding to each other. Atoms are the basic unit of all matter.

2 Parts of an Atom Nucleus proton neutron Electron

3 Atoms and Elements Every known type of atom is represented by an element symbol in the Periodic Table of the Elements.

4 Molecules In a molecule, one atom is bonded to one or more additional atoms, whether or not they are the same or different. Example?

5 Compounds Compounds are molecules that are made of DIFFERENT types of atoms. Example?

6 How to Make Stuff . . . Like Water
Start with some atoms of hydrogen and oxygen. Bond them together to make a compound made from one oxygen atom and two hydrogen atoms. Why can a water molecule also be called a compound? H2O

7 How to Make Stuff . . . Like Oxygen
Start with a lot of oxygen atoms. Bond one oxygen atom to another oxygen atom. This forms a molecule of oxygen but NOT a compound. Why is this diatomic molecule NOT a compound? O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O:O

8 Atom Molecule Compound
Let’s Review. . .In your notesheet, describe and draw a picture of the following: Atom Molecule Compound

9 Atom What is it? What might it look like?

10 Molecule What is it? What might it look like?

11 Compound What is it? What might it look like?

12 Mixture NOT chemically bonded!
Particles may touch each other but they retain their unique properties.

13 Mixtures Mass a beaker with 100 mL of water and record to the nearest tenth of a gram. Mass a spoonful of salt and a spoonful of sand. Record to the nearest tenth of a gram. Mix the sand and salt in the water. Stir and observe. What happened?

14 Different Types of Mixtures
Heterogeneous – The mixture looks different from one part of the mix to another. Example: Cup of desk items. Homogenous – The mixture looks the SAME from one part of the mix to another. Example: Many solutions – when one substance dissolves in another (sugar in water) the sugar molecules and the water molecules are still sugar and water. They DO NOT change into new substances. Any solution that does not cause a chemical reaction is a mixture. It can easily be separated back into sugar and water. How?
