Thursday, Jan. 23 rd : “A” Day Friday, Jan. 24 th : “B” Day Agenda  Check lab write-ups for completion  Lab Discussion: “Is It An Ionic Compound?”  Lab: “Is It An Ionic Compound” Lab will be due next time…

Lab: “Is it an Ionic Compound?” Discussion  Test 1 sample at a time so you don’t get them mixed up. You don’t have to start with calcium chloride; you can start at any lab table that’s available.  Don’t spend a lot of time at the balances; you don’t need exactly 2.00g of each substance.  Use 2-3 tablets when testing the ibuprofen and acetaminophen. You will need to use the mortar and pestle to crush up the samples.

Lab: “Is it an Ionic Compound?” Discussion  You will not need to perform any tests on the oxygen and water samples, other than their description/physical state, to determine if they are ionic compounds. WHY?  You don’t need a specific melting point temperature. Just state whether or not the substance melted as well as your observations upon heating.

Lab: “Is it an Ionic Compound?” Discussion  Since we only have 1 conductivity tester, you will need to share. It is on the cart in the back of the room.  Be sure to rinse the conductivity tester thoroughly with distilled water so that it’s ready for the next person.  You will use a different test tube for heating each sample (they are already in the test tube rack).  If your sample doesn’t melt, you can just use that same sample to see it dissolves in water.

Lab: “Is it an Ionic Compound?” Discussion  You will use the same beaker, rinsed and dried, for all of the samples.

Lab: “Is it an Ionic Compound?” Safety Items  Never taste any chemicals, even if you KNOW they are sugar, salt, etc…  You will be using bunsen burners in this lab – make sure hair is tied back!  When heating the test tubes, DO NOT point the open end of the test tube at another student and DO NOT look directly down into the test tube.  Remember: hot glass and cold glass look the same. Put the hot test tubes back in the rack to cool before cleaning them!

Lab: “Is it an Ionic Compound?” Safety Items  DO NOT heat the test tubes for more than the designated time. If it starts smoking, remove it from the flame.  If the test tube cracks, turn off the flame and put the test tube in the rack to cool.  DO NOT pour the ibuprofen or acetaminophen solids down the drain. Pour the solids into the waste funnel and then rinse your beaker in the sink.

Lab: “Is it an Ionic Compound?” Analysis and Conclusion Questions  All lab questions need to be answered using COMPLETE SENTENCES!  Think about the TITLE of the lab when grouping substances according to their properties…  When finished, be sure to CLEAN all of your equipment and put it back where you found it. Have fun and BE SAFE in the lab!
