technology The application (use) of science for practical purposes; the use of tools, machines, materials and processes to meet human needs.

SI units An an abreviation for System International (metrics)

volume The three dimensional space inside something. The volume of liquid is measured in liters. To find the volume multiply length times with times height. 1L=1cm3

mass A measure of the amount of matter in an object. The amount of mass in an object is constant anywhere in the universe. The gram is the base unit for mass. Mass can be measured by using a balance. Weight is different, it is a measure of the force of gravity on an object.

weight Weight is a measure of the amount of gravity on an object and is expressed in newtons. So, the weight changes depending on where the object is in the universe. Weight is measured by using a spring scale.

temperature A measure of how hot or cold something is. It may be measured in Celsius or Fahrenheit

summary Life scientists use tools to collect , store, organize analyze and share data. Scientists use technology such a calculators, computers, binoculars, and microscopes. The International System of Units (SI) is a simple and reliable system of measurement that is used by most scientists. Graduated cylinders measure the volume of liquids, rulers/meter sticks measure length, thermometers measure temperature, and balances measure mass. You can calculate the area and volume of box shaped solids by using measurements taken with a ruler/ meter stick.
