3. Mass vs. Weight Weight is the amount of gravitational pull on an object. Weight is measured with a scale. Gravitational pull is dependent on: 1.The size of the planet the object is on (larger-more gravitational pull) 2.Where the object is in relation to the center of gravity of the planet (further away – less gravitational pull) What is weight? 5. Volume Volume is the measure of the amount of space an object takes up. The basic SI unit of volume is the liter. You can compute the volume of a rectangular prism using the formula V = l x w x h. 1 cm 3 = 1mL You can also compute the volume of an object by placing the object in a graduated cylinder filled with water. 6. Density Density is the measure of the amount of mass (M) in a given volume (V). The formula for density is d = m. v The density of water is 1.0 gm/cm 3. 7. Temperature Temperature is the measure of how hot or cold something is. It can also be called the measure of the amount of movement of the particles within the object. The three basic scales of temperature are Celsius (C), Fahrenheit (F), and Kelvin (K). The Systems International (SI) unit for measuring temperature is the Kelvin.
