Presentation transcript:

Aims To introduce the concept of Growth and Fixed Mindset and how this can help enable success Consider the presentation of learners with each type of Mindset How might we as teachers help develop a Growth Mindset environment

Challenge You will be given an A4 sheet of paper and your task is to find a way to fit your whole body through it. The only requirement is that you have to keep the outside edge of your paper in tact.

How can we prepare young people to thrive in the 21st century? Question at the heart of many educators. We want to understand how to build and develop the best learning environments and programmes in order to facilitate success.

What does a learner need in order to be successful and achieve? What do you think is the most important thing

Thinking beyond the ‘Test Score’ mentality Evidence suggests that focussing only on academic attainment is too short sighted Educational establishments we should be designing our curriculums in a way that promote the development of knowledge, skills and attributes beyond academic knowledge, with a focus on those skills that optimise success It is the responsibility of the educational community to design their provisions in a way that promotes the development of these factors

What if success depends on more than just talent? IQ is not the only difference between our best and worst learners What we need is a better understanding of motivational and psychological factors that impact on success with the academic environment – and work out ways to develop these

Successful Learners Psychological development Skill Development Academic Achievement

Malleability of the brain Is intelligence and capability developable? Malleability and development of neurons

Growth vs Fixed Mindset Please complete the questionnaire and score your responses – you do not need to discuss your responses if you don’t want to ml

The Role of Cognition Adopts the notion that Mindsets are at the heart of learning and potential Fixed Mindsets – where people believe that intelligence and capability is fixed Growth Mindsets – Where people believe that intelligence and capability can be developed Both see students approach learning in very different ways

Mindset How might growth and fixed mindsets learners differ in their approach to learning?

Fundamental differences between learners Goals Effort Setbacks

How the Growth and Fixed Differ? FactorApproach Goals Believe that they should look smart at all costs – Never look stupid Learn at all times and at all costs Effort Things should come naturally – effort is low Effort activates ability Setbacks Should hide or avoid setbacks as this challenges competence Setbacks are a natural part of learning and we should capitalize on mistakes
