Flexible brain ‘muscle’ using Resilience Resourcefulness Reflectiveness Reciprocity In 8 words:

11 6/25/2018 ACTIVITY In teams, describe (with single words) the 4 R’s Resilience Resourcefulness Reflectiveness Reciprocity Let’s get started then: We’re going to look at 2 big questions: Why train students? And What is the role of the trainer? Split the group into 2 calling one Group A and the other Group B. Give them some flipchart paper and pens, ask each to nominate a scribe. Prompt Group A: Think about why people come to training…. Employability, CV building, meet new people, to enable you to do something else, develop confidence Why have you come to this training session? Learn a new skill, to find out more about a topic, explore your own ideas and attitudes Prompt Group B: Personal skills: putting people at ease, communicating effectively, sharing experience Technical duties: administration, planning and delivering the session, facilitation, answering questions, Once both groups have nearly finished ask them to nominate a spokesperson to present back.

12 Growth Mindset: What it isn’t
Anyone can do anything That ability doesn’t matter Anti-competition Making people feel better about failing Simply telling people to ‘try harder’ A quick fix

13 Growth Mindset: What it is
A specific narrative / phrases / words Accentuates the positive, eliminates the negative Promotes positive learning Supportive, encouraging, solution focused Encourages entrepreneurial thinking Open to all

14 Growth Mindset: The narrative
When you master this learning, you can be proud of yourself, because this isn't easy We’ll be firing a lot of neurons today while we learn, we may not make all the necessary connections to understand this material and that’s ok – we’ll get there

15 Growth Mindset: What are the benefits?
More likely to willingly tackle challenges Increased perseverance Reduced frustration Mistakes valued Better academic achievement

16 Why is a growth mindset important?
The most successful long-term learners embody a growth mindset Not believing you can be successful could limit their potential

17 It’s just as relevant for
Growth mindset ‘The value of [growth mindset] extends way beyond the world of education. It’s just as relevant for business people who want to cultivate talent and … thrive on challenge’ Bill Gates

18 Growth mindset behaviour
Add "yet" when you think "I can't do it.“ Action strategies when stuck Believe in success Celebrate mistakes Use other people’s successes as a learning opportunity to share

19 Solution Focus With a Solution Focus we ask…
What would you do differently next time? What little step could you make towards a solution? What would the ideal situation look like?

20 Solution Focus What’s wrong What needs fixing Expert knows best
Deficits & weaknesses What’s wanted What’s working Collaboration Resources & strengths Problems Solutions
