Possession

Possession In French, the “-’s” DOES NOT EXIST. For example, in English, one would say “Marc’s pen.” In French, however, one is required to say “the pen of Marc” OR “le stylo de Marc.”

Possession As you have seen, one way to indicate possession is with “de”. Exemples: Marc est le frère de Lucienne. C’est la chaise de Mme Odell. C’est le bureau de Maxent. Madeline est la soeur d’Anne et de Max.

Possession Translate the following from English to French. Gaston’s desk Le bureau de Gaston Adèle’s brothers Les frères d’Adèle Marie’s mother La mère de Marie

Possessive adjectives

Possessive adjectives The possessive adjectives serve to express ownership or possession (hence the name). They are called possessive adjectives because they modify the noun to which they refer. Consequently, they will agree in gender and number with the noun that they introduce.
