Parenting Styles

1971 Diane Baumrind began research to identify various styles of parenting and the effects on child development.

Baumrind identified 4 specific parenting styles as a result of her research. 1.Authoritarian Family – Parents are the BOSS!!! They don’t need to explain their actions to their children. 2.Democratic Parents – Children participate in the decision making process.

3. Permissive Family – the children have the final say. 4. Uninvolved parents – Very self- centered parents. Parents have ZERO involvement with their kids.

Affects of the various parenting styles Children from Democratic families tend to be more confident with their judgments and goals. Children in Democratic families are able to assume responsibility gradually. Children are also more likely to identify with parents who respect them.

Keys to Effective Parenting The Keys to effective parenting according to Baumrind is to 1.Establish limits for kids. 2. Respond to the child with support
