2 Decision Making Definition Both parents are responsible for communicating with each other to form a parenting style that can be used to make decisions about their children.

3 How do Child-Rearing Practices Differ? Based on culture, background and location can make parenting practices different from family to family The make up of the family unit can also affect how a family makes decisions (parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, single parents etc)

4 Stages of Parenthood Parenting practices change as children move from one developmental stage to another (infant different from parenting a teenager)

5 Parenting Theories Discipline vs punishment Discipline: providing examples, guidance, encouragement and rules so that children learn acceptable behaviour Punishment: reactive, it is a penalty for a wrong doing

6 Parenting Styles Authoritarian: uses commands and authority Permissive: overlook misbehaviours Democratic: sets limits, uses encouragements and provides rationales

7 Democratic Parenting Parents are generally self-confident, relaxed but firm in management They set limits on behaviour They give clear explanations Communication: allows children to voice their opinions and understand their own emotions and usually gets kids to cooperate

8 Positive Parenting Parenting that respects children for their individual natures Allows parents and children to have fun together and develop a relationship based on enjoyment and respect Foundation based on love

9 Styles and Decision Making Parenting styles can affect how parents will make their decisions about and for their children Communication is key between the parents in order for consistency to be maintained within the family unit
