Human beings are highly social and are drawn to communicating media. More than 53 million American adults have used the internet to blog, communicate, post images, share files, or contribute content remains the most popular internet application Other activities include: ▫ Instant messaging ▫ Blogging ▫ Podcasting Taking Charge 14

Web 2.0 services support the formation of virtual communities, people interacting with each via the internet Privacy is an issue in online communities Some groups’ logs are archived to Web pages Law enforcement can gather group correspondence from the hosting ISP Some groups are private, but none can guarantee complete privacy 15

If you are concerned about privacy, you can use an anonymous r er An anonymous r er is an account that safeguards your real identity ▫ The service is operated outside the US ▫ It is like a Swiss bank account for online communications ▫ Some anonymous r ers are free; other are not 16

What Is Web 2.0? Web 1.0 focused on a relatively small number of companies and advertisers producing content = “brochure web” Web 2.0 involves the user. Web 1.0 is as a lecture and Web 2.0 is a conversation. Many Web 2.0 companies are built almost entirely on user- generated content and harnessing collective intelligence. Google, MySpace, Flickr, YouTube and Wikipedia, users create the content, while the sites provide the platforms. 19

Services include Social networking Weblogs (aka blogs) Syndication (RSS feeds) Wikis Folksonomies People are the key component of Web 2.0 People contribute content in various ways Video files (YouTube), Audio files (podcasts), Personal commentary (blogs, online forums), Scholarly information (wikipedia), Categorizing (del.icio.us) 20

User-Generated Content Key to success for many of today’s leading Web 2.0 companies = user-generated content ▫ articles ▫ home videos ▫ Photos ▫ implicitly generated Collective Intelligence ▫ Collaboration can result in smart ideas Wikis ▫ Allow users to edit existing content and add new information ▫ Wikipedia ▫ Wikia ▫ Media­Wiki open source software ▫ SocialText ▫ Using wikis for project collaboration reduces s and phone calls between employees, while allowing the ability to closely track a project’s changes 21

Blogging and personal safety tips: ▫ Limit your audience using access control tools if provided ▫ Don’t write anything you may come to regret later, especially those nasty comments about your boss, coworkers, or neighbors! ▫ Never reveal confidential information ▫ No unlawful posts (libel, harassment, threats, etc.) ▫ Don’t encourage criminal activity ▫ Read and observe your service provider’s Terms of Service 25
