What is Emotional Intelligence? O Understanding one’s own feelings, empathy for the feelings of others and the regulation of emotion in a way that enhances living (Daniel Goleman, 1995) O The subset of social intelligence that involves the ability to monitor one’s own and others’ feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and actions (Salovey & Mayer, 1990)

What is Emotional Intelligence? O The ability to perceive, control and evaluate emotions O Abbreviated as EI / EQ (emotional quotient) O Can be learned and strengthened O Also identified as inborn characteristic O Two claims for getting popular of the study: O Emotional intelligence may be more important for personal success than IQ O Unlike IQ, emotional intelligence can be improved

Stimulator of Emotional Intelligence O Five Domains of EQ (Goleman, 1995): O Knowing your emotions O Managing your own emotions O Motivating yourself O Recognizing and understanding other people’s emotions O Managing relationships (i.e. managing the emotions of others)

Factors for Contributing & Inhibiting Emotional Intelligence O Perceptions of emotions: O First step in understanding emotions: perceive accurately O Might involve understanding nonverbal signals (e.g. body language, facial expression) O Ability to reason using emotions: O Involves using emotions to promote thinking and cognitive activity O Emotions help prioritize what we pay attention and react to O We respond emotionally to things that garner our attention

Factors for Contributing & Inhibiting Emotional Intelligence O Ability to understand emotions: O The perceived emotion can carry a wide variety of meanings O The observer must interpret the cause of their emotion and what it might mean O E.g. Boss gets angry is due to your poor working performance/got speeding ticket/quarrels with wife? O Ability to manage emotions: O Crucial part: regulating emotions, responding appropriately, and responding to the emotions of others, are important aspect in managing emotion
