Emotional Intelligence Objectives: Understand the different between I.Q. (Intelligence Quotient) and Emotional Intelligence Develop an understanding of Emotional Intelligence and the skills it measures

Introduction ?? If I could teach you that would you be interested? Well, let me ask you this: –Do you know what your I.Q. is? –Have you heard any discussions about how smart someone is? –Do you think you are very smart? –How can you tell if someone is very smart? –What would you base your opinion on and how would you know if you’re right?

What is Emotional Intelligence? Most people in education have been taught that “intelligence” is a combined score of math and verbal abilities. The way that we measure this is by giving you a test and then scoring it. The result is what we would call your I.Q. or intelligence quotient. But I.Q. does not tell us anything about how people will perform in their work place nor does it tell us anything about how “smart” someone is. To determine “smart” we have to look at some other things. This is what Emotional Intelligence is all about. It is a measure of several skills and abilities that are neither verbal nor mathematical.

The ability to perceive, control, and evaluate emotions. Emotional Intelligence “…involves the ability to monitor one’s own and other’s feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them, and to use this information to guide one’s own thinking and actions.” –Peter Salovey and John D. Mayer (1990)

Group Discussion What kind of skills would you guess make up the emotional scales? Here’s a hint: You have to have these skills to do will in society. You have to have these skills to do well with people. These are the personal skills and “people skills” that make things happen.

The EIQ Scales I nterpersonal Skills – the scale combines empathy and social skills P ersistence – the ability to stick with something O ptimism – the ability to be positive in the face of adversity or struggle S elf-Awareness – the ability to understand who you really are S elf-Control – the ability to control your impulses or urges to do something E mpathy – the ability to feel what others feel S ocial Skills – the ability to interact with others in a positive, successful way S elf-Motivation – the ability to tell yourself what to do, rather than having to have someone else tell you what to do

Group Work – I POSSESS Create groups of 5 Develop a cheer or a song with motions to act out the acronym: I POSSESS Each letter should be associated with its word, such as: “I – Interpersonal Skills.” An example would be the YMCA song. Will vote and choose a winner that the whole class will learn.

Back to the original question… If I could teach you the skills to get a job, make more money, impress the President, and get adults to treat you with respect, would you be interested? There will be a test for this material, but it won’t be on paper. The test for these skills is in the real world. We will use these skills, and you will see the difference for yourself.
